Implied vs true probability

Every odds price implies a probability. Decimal odds of 2.00 imply 50%. Decimal odds of 4.00 imply 25%. A "value bet" is one where our model estimates the true probability is materially higher than the bookmaker's implied probability — creating positive expected value.

The edge formula

Edge = (True Probability × Decimal Odds) − 1. If our model estimates a 30% chance on a 4.00 line, edge = (0.30 × 4.00) − 1 = 0.20 = 20%. Consistent positive-edge bets, sized correctly, are what compound over time.

Value ≠ picking winners

A value bet can lose. A single 30%-true-probability bet loses 70% of the time. Value betting compounds over many correctly-priced bets, not on any single result. This is why bankroll discipline matters — your job is to keep placing +EV bets long enough for the edge to show.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate "true" probability?

The whole point of our three-stage research process — statistical modelling, match-context, senior analyst review — is producing a defensible true-probability estimate for each fixture.

Can value betting still lose money short-term?

Yes. Variance is real. Value betting is a long-run strategy — you need enough sample size for edge to overcome noise.

Do all your picks have positive expected value?

Every published pick clears our conviction threshold, which is calibrated to positive expected value at the published odds. Predictions still carry risk.
